When I chart the trajectory, my strong hunch is, as I say in the article, a huge loss of jobs due to automation, which will more than offset slowing populations. There is quite literally no economic or ecological problem with declining population rates if the commons can find a way to gain back its lost gains from the extractor class.
As I told another another commenter, the anti-Malthusian line is old and tired-- he was right in the macro sense (that there is a maximum sustainable number within a biological system) and we have already passed that point.
